In the view of Food & Water Watch and many environmental justice organizations, California’s cap-and trade program is a convenient way for Big Oil to pay to pollute, without cleaning up its own mess.
Food & Water Watch is hosting a California Webinar, “Why Cap & Trade and Carbon Tax Are False Solutions,” with Scott Edwards, their resident expert on climate policy. He’ll explain their opposition to cap-and-trade and answer any questions you might have. For example, what about the monies from cap-and-trade that are designated for programs in underserved communities?
Cap and trade was designed to combat climate change, but there’s no evidence that it is actually reducing pollution in California. In fact, pollution in several sectors, including the oil and gas industry, has grown. Meanwhile, communities of color and people in poverty are bearing the brunt of this market scheme, living in sacrifice zones and breathing in the harmful pollution that comes with carbon emissions. Can cap-and-trade funding really compensate for these physical assaults?
