In November, the good people of Monterey passed Measure Z to ban fracking in their oil fields. Big Oil poured $5.4 million into multimedia ads, but the grassroots campaign won with 56% of the vote, despite being outspent 18 to 1.
Unfortunately, Big Oil does not respect democracy and the will of the people. After the election, Chevron, Aera Energy (owned by Exxon Mobil and Shell) and other parties filed lawsuits challenging Measure Z. They also worked to secure a court order to stay the implementation of Measure Z.
Protect Monterey County has assembled a crack legal team to intervene in the law suits. Most of these lawyers are working pro bono, but PMC still needs to cover a portion of their $2,000/month expenses (which could increase).
Please consider making a donation to the Measure Z legal defense fund. Donations are not tax deductible, but every penny will go toward legal and related expenses incurred by the all-volunteer group. Make checks payable to: “PMC” or Protect Monterey County and send to P.O. Box 1946, Monterey, CA 93942.
