After a decade of pressure from the Bay Area Environmental Health Collaborative, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District has created a Cumulative Impact Working Group to focus on the total effects of pollution from different sources.
Come to this overview session, where BAAQMD will present its approach to handling the cumulative impacts of toxics in their permitting process.
The environmental justice community needs to have a strong presence and strong community voices at this meeting. If we succeed in getting BAAQMD to commit to considering cumulative impacts, it will make it much harder for them to justify issuing permits to pollute in overburdened communities. And it can be a model for other agencies to follow (a similar effort is underway statewide with state Department of Toxic Substances Control).
