E & B Natural Resources, which operates a dozen oil wells outside of Livermore, has applied for an exemption to allow it to inject oilfield wastewater into the Livermore (Greenville Sands) Aquifer. If state regulators and the federal EPA let them proceed, this could contaminate a future source of drinking water and put the Bay Area at increased earthquake risk. Many Livermore and Bay Area residents spoke out against this proposal at a Department of Conservation hearing on January 11th.
You can still submit a written comment before 5 p.m. on January 25th. Comments may be submitted by email to email@example.com, by FAX to (916) 445-3319, or by mail to: Department of Conservation 801 K Street, MS 18-05 Sacramento, CA 95814, ATTN: Aquifer Exemption.
The state Water Resources Board must issue a recommendation to federal EPA, which will then decide on whether or not to grant the exemption to the Safe Drinking Water Act to allow wastewater injection.
Here are talking points for written comments, or writing letters to the editor of Bay Area newspapers.
