Transit Workers Local 192 members rallied for hazard pay in 2021. The campaign for hazard pay helped forge an alliance between riders and drivers.
Reducing the damage caused by the climate crisis requires a massive increase and improvement in public transportation. But instead of rising to current needs, AC Transit (Alameda/Contra Costa) is getting even less reliable. AC Transit workers say that’s because their working conditions are so bad that the agency is seriously understaffed.

At a Zoom town hall meeting in April hosted by AC Transit director Jovanka Beckles, more than 80 AC Transit workers described intolerable working conditions: overwork, inadequate breaks, safety hazards, and a pervasive culture of disrespect.
The petition lists specific steps management should take to:
- Provide respect and dignity
- Improve hiring and supervision practices
- End excessive discipline and micro-management
- Address and resolve workplace safety issues to prevent injuries
- End excessive work hours
- Fix planning and scheduling
- Strengthen and improve opportunities for career advancement
- Improve compensation and benefits
