A bill currently in the California legislature would provide state support to the unproven and dangerous “carbon capture and storage” (CCS) technology.
The idea behind CCS is to allow the continued burning of fossil fuels but “capture” some of the carbon dioxide and store it underground.
But CCS:
* requires more energy, increasing pollution and negative health impacts on frontline communities
* extends the life of fossil fuels and squanders billions of dollars in public funds that should be used to build a real green economy
* often doesn’t work — many projects actually increase CO2 emissions
* usually leads to even more extraction of fossil fuel: in most CCS projects, the captured CO2 is injected into oil and gas wells to increase their production.
SB 1101, currently in the legislature, would create a state program to promote Carbon Capture and Storage.
SB 1314 would prohibit CCS projects from being used for extreme extraction of fossil fuels.
Both of these bills have now passed the Assembly Natural Resources Committee and are now headed for the Assembly Appropriations Committee.
Please join the Center for Biological Diversity to tell the Assembly: Vote no on SB 1101, Vote yes on SB 1314.
