Two Contra Costa refineries — Marathon and Phillips 66 — are converting from refining petroleum to refining oils made from plants and animals. Massive public funding is going into producing “biofuel,” “biodiesel,” and “sustainable aviation fuel.” Burning these fuels is promoted as “renewable energy,” because the carbon dioxide released by burning them can be absorbed by living plants.
But is this green energy or greenwashing? What are the real likely public health and global climate impacts of the current pivot to bioenergy?
Speaker Gary Hughes, Americas Program Director of the international organization Biofuelwatch, has worked on a large variety of domestic and international forest, climate and energy issues. He will unpack the some of the technical language to explain the reality behind biofuel claims.
