Sunflower Alliance and Contra Costa County environmental justice activist Shoshana Wechsler is a 2020 winner of the Leadership in Sustainability award, which honors “leaders and activists whose good work is making Contra Costa communities healthy, beautiful, clean, and resilient.”
The award is given annually to individuals, nonprofits, government programs, schools, and businesses by Sustainable Contra Costa, a coalition of community organizations, public agencies and businesses “designing and building pathways to ecologically sustainable, economically vibrant, and socially just communities for all.”
Some excerpts from her nomination document:
Shoshana has provided key leadership for sustainability in Contra Costa County over the last seven years. As a founding member of the Sunflower Alliance, she has been a leader in numerous efforts to protect the public from health-harming pollution, especially in frontline communities, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and to promote clean energy. . . . Most recently she has been providing key support to residents of Brentwood fighting a proposed new oil well in their neighborhood.
Shoshana also serves on the Contra Costa Sustainability Commission, where her leadership led to a recently passed unanimous recommendation for a moratorium on fossil fuel extraction in the county. Shoshana frequently speaks at meetings of community organizations and local government bodies. She has helped organize public town hall meetings on a number of topics including last year’s event at which a panel of experts discussed implications of the Phillips 66 Marine Terminal expansion for both climate and public health.
Join this year’s Leadership in Sustainability Awards Party to help honor Shoshana.
