Transportation produces 28% of US greenhouse gas emissions—more than any other sector—and massive, murderous air pollution. Add your name to current campaigns tackling diesel pollution and protecting the health of the public transit workers who are so key to providing clean, energy-efficient transportation.
By May 28: Defend California’s groundbreaking electric-truck requirements from industry pressure.
California’s heavy-duty trucks produce roughly 40% of the nitrogen oxides that are a principal component of smog. The trucks also emit diesel particulate matter that lingers over communities, creating ‘diesel death zones’ that elevate levels of asthma, heart disease and cancer. Rapidly phasing out diesel trucks for clean electric trucks would be a huge win for our communities, public health, and air quality.
Here in the Bay Area, electric trucks are key to making sure everyone has clean air. Decades of port expansion and freeway construction purposefully concentrated pollution in the West Oakland community and made it the primary route for heavy-duty trucks accessing the Port of Oakland. West Oaklanders have long been organizing and fighting for clean air and safer truck routes. A strong electric trucks requirement is a critical act of solidarity to ensure further progress in this fight
The California Air Resources Board has created an Advanced Clean Truck Rule, which would cut pollution by requiring medium- and heavy-duty truck makers to sell an increasing number of clean, electric trucks in California in place of dirty diesel and gasoline vehicles. This rule is stronger than previous versions because of advocacy by environmental organizations.
Now industry groups that operate at ports and warehouses are pressuring state officials to delay or even suspend this rule. We have until May 28 to urge CARB to reject this pressure and finalize the rule.

Protect the health of public transportation workers and riders
Public transit workers are on the front lines every day providing essential transportation during the Covid-19 crisis. But they’re not getting the protection they need to stay safe. You can show your support for workers and riders by signing and sharing the following petitions targeting local, regional and federal officials:
- Local: Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) International is demanding that transit agencies and private contractors provide stronger safety protections for workers. You can support this national ask here.
- Regional: ATU Locals 192, 265, and 1574 in partnership with East Bay Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) are asking the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) to allocate federal dollars to the health and safety of riders and workers in the Bay Area. Support their asks here.
- National: Federal: Transit Center, a national transit advocacy and research organization, has organized a petition that supports a national sign on letter to demand the White House coordinate provision of N95 masks and other protective gear for frontline transit workers. You can sign the petition here.
