Global Climate Strike for COP 27, November 10

October 26, 2022

Join the international movement led by African, Egyptian, and Arab climate justice organizations in a global climate strike to demand that this year’s UN climate meetings in Egypt — COP 27 — go beyond business as usual to take urgent, powerful action on climate justice.

In San Francisco, Youth vs Apocalypse (YVA) is leading a coalition of many local climate and environmental justice organizations saying: Choose Action Now! Defund violence, Fund our futures!

YVA: “We are coming together to confront the systems that sacrifice our lives for a profit, be that climate destroying fossil fuel companies, or those that profit from and promote militarism and war. In the middle of war around the world and violence on our streets, we are gathering to celebrate our community and each other – to show that we are not disposable and that young people and the planet must be protected from all forms of violence.”

After gathering at Embarcadero Plaza, participants will go on a short march to the SF offices of military contractor Lockheed Martin and to a military recruitment office.

YVA: “We know that the military is the largest emitter of greenhouse gasses in the world and is exempted from following climate protections just as police are offered qualified immunity for their actions. Just as military expansion sacrifices the lives of youth of color through military recruitment, and of communities around the world through militarization and violence, it is also waging a war against our planet.”

Marchers will then return to Embarcadero Plaza for speakers and activities highlighting positive actions we can take for a healthy future. Voices for Public Transportation will bring its campaign, “transit = climate,” pointing to the key role that an expanded, accessible, convenient, green public transportation system must play in a sustainable future.

A big turnout will show that the Bay Area is serious about demanding meaningful climate justice action now.
