Jobs for Former Coal Workers–Transition to Sustainable Economy

October 5, 2017

This article from the New York Times business section describes projects in Wyoming and West Virginia that are providing jobs for the growing number of people laid off from the coal industry. A Chinese company is building a wind turbine factory in Wyoming and nonprofits in West Virginia are developing projects in industries from solar panel installation to beekeeping. The catch is that the new jobs pay less than coal industry jobs, so these projects fall short of providing a full just transition. But they provide examples of the potential for developing good jobs for workers from the fossil fuel industry as it (we hope) declines.
