California Assembly District 15 is one of the state’s noisiest, most progressive districts. It stretches from Hercules in the north, south through Richmond, El Cerrito, Kensington, Albany, Berkeley, North Oakland, to Piedmont and Montclair. It deserves a representative who will vigorously champion progressive values in the state assembly. On June 5th we have a choice to send a real fighter for social, economic and environmental justice to Sacramento.
Jovanka Beckles has a proven record during two terms on the Richmond City Council that she’ll fight against the depredations of big corporations—in Richmond, the Chevron refinery. Further south, for Oakland’s future, she opposes attempts to make the Port an export route for coal from Utah.
She’s determined, tough, pushy but charismatic, and has a record of working with all kinds of people. She’s especially concerned about refinery pollution because of her experiences as a Contra Costa health worker helping low income-children with asthma.
Jovanka Beckles is the only candidate for Assembly District 15 who has pledged not be financed or influenced by corporations. None of her opponents have duplicated her pledge.
Sunflower Alliance has enthusiastically endorsed her, as have four other environmental organizations: Asian Pacific Environmental Network Action, Communities for a Better Environment Action, California Environmental Justice Network Action, and California League of Conservation Voters. She was also one of the first candidates in the U.S. to be endorsed by Bernie Sanders’ Our Revolution. Other endorsers are the Working Families Party; the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU), Local 192; Berkeley Council of Classified Employees (BCCE), Local 6192; the Service Employees International Union, SEIU-CA; Teamsters Joint Council 7; Equality California; Harvey Milk LGBTQ Democratic Club; Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment (ACCE) Action; Berkeley Citizens Action; Berkeley Progressive Alliance; Berkeley Tenants Union; Democratic Socialists of America, East Bay; Pinole Progressive Alliance; Richmond Progressive Alliance; and the Contra Costa County Green Party.
We need to send Jovanka to Sacramento because she listens to the people. You are the people. Speak up to everyone you know, or don’t know yet. Donate to Jovanka. Push for environmental justice and a just transition! Visit http://www.jovanka.org/ to find out more about her campaign.
