Sign this petition to support AB345, which would ban new oil and gas wells within 2500 feet of homes, schools, playgrounds, medical clinics, and hospitals. Drilling and maintaining these wells pollutes both air and water, creating huge health impacts including nosebleeds, rashes, asthma, pre-term births, and in some cases, cancer.
Proximity matters–people living closest to these wells suffer the most harm. In California, wells are concentrated in communities of color and low income communities. One-third of residents within one mile of an oil or gas well live in areas of the State most burdened by environmental pollution and 92 percent of Californians living in these heavily burdened neighborhoods are people of color.
AB 345 is under attack from Big Oil—It is their #1 “bill to kill” this legislative session. Their lobbyists are now at work to prevent the bill from coming up for a vote — so support is urgent.
This bill is only the first step toward banning oil and gas extraction close to communities, schools, and hospitals — and a planned phase-out of all oil and gas extraction and processing in California.
