“Those who profess to favor freedom yet deprecate agitation, are people who want crops without ploughing; they want rain without thunder and lightning; they want the ocean without the roar of its many waters.” —Frederick Douglass.
This presentation on Non-Violent Direct Action, created by Steve Nadel, looks at the purpose and methods of NVDA. Through documentary photographs of actions reaching back several decades, Steve reminds us that social progress often does not come without “thunder and lightning.”
The presentation states that the purpose of direct action is to challenge the power structures that maintain business-as-usual in the face of injustice, violence perpetrated in the name of “order,” or destruction of the environment.
