Devastating fires, floods, and droughts are upon us, and the world’s leading scientists warn we have only 11 years to take transformative climate action. Please sign the Last Chance Alliance’s petition to accelerate climate justice in California.
Despite its reputation for climate leadership, California remains one of the largest oil producers in the US, and the source of some of the world’s dirtiest oil. About 5.4 million Californians live less than a mile from 84,000+ existing oil and gas wells. Low-income neighborhoods and communities of color are disproportionately impacted by the toxic hazards of fossil fuels extraction. So, what can we do to protect our communities?
California Governor Gavin Newsom is uniquely positioned to take up the mantle of climate justice leadership. By taking action to stop investing in the fossil fuel industry in California, he can model for the world what it looks like to lead a transition away from fossil fuels that prioritizes justice for frontline communities, workers, and future generations.
Here are three actions that California Governor Gavin Newsom can take now to protect Californians from this climate and health emergency:
- STOP new fossil fuel projects that pump more climate-changing carbon into our atmosphere.
- DROP existing oil production that pollutes California’s air.
- ROLL out a 2,500-foot setback policy that protects frontline communities living near dangerous oil drilling.
Please sign Last Chance Alliance’s petition to urge California Governor Gavin Newsom to stop building out the fossil fuel industry, starting with immediate health and safety protections for frontline communities.
