On Friday, May 24th, Vallejo Marine Terminal/Orcem withdrew its appeal of the Vallejo Planning Commission’s recommendation to deny its project. The people of Vallejo have won their long fight against a proposed cement plant and deep-water port in an already over-polluted community! Fresh Air Vallejo has been fighting for many years to stop this climate and environmental justice disaster.
The proposed cement plant and port — along with diesel emissions from the trucks and trains it would require — would have released huge amounts of pollution and greenhouse gases into South/Central Vallejo. The California Department of Justice declared the project environmentally unjust. And Baykeeper, the Sierra Club, and others warned that a new deep-water port could become a site for exporting coal.
After postponing its decision on this project for two years to get more information, the city council scheduled a final hearing for May 30th. But the wicked witch is dead, and that hearing has been cancelled. The city council now needs to seriously work on waterfront development that delivers good, healthy jobs for all skill levels, creates affordable housing, and brings South Vallejo a grocery store!
