State legislators must step up to increase funding for public transportation to prevent collapse of our local transit agencies. Join Voices for Public Transportation in Sacramento for a rally and legislative visits on the day of the first hearing of the Senate Select Committee on Bay Area Public Transit .
Public transit agencies experienced drastic financial losses as ridership plummeted during the pandemic. Ridership is going back up slowly, but not to its former levels — and soon the federal emergency funding that was keeping our transit agencies going will end.
Public transportation is not only a crucial economic justice issue but also a necessity for addressing the climate crisis. Our current dependence on cars is not sustainable. We can’t afford the waste of money, materials and energy now devoted to manufacturing and maintaining so many cars and the massive infrastructure they require — as well as ecological cost of paving over so much of our land.
Public transportation advocates throughout California are fighting for increased state funding for local transit agencies to save them from going over a “fiscal cliff” when federal emergency funding runs out. But Governor Newsom’s budget proposes to cut $4 billion from state support for public transportation.
