Support Democracy in Richmond Planning for Cleaner Air, September 29

September 26, 2020

Please join Richmond-San Pablo environmental justice leaders to help bring democracy and transparency to the Community Emissions Reduction Program (CERP).

The CERP is the action part of an air pollution reduction process created in 2017 by the AB 617 Community Air Protection Program. The goal of AB 617 is to reduce exposure in communities most impacted by air pollution. It sets up a process for environmental justice communities to work together on new strategies to measure air pollution and reduce health impacts.

In the Richmond-San Pablo area, a design team is now working on creating a steering committee to make decisions about reducing pollution. Environmental justice leaders want to make sure that the CERP Design Team adopts measures to ensure a democratic and transparent process for CERP Steering Committee decisions about polluters in Richmond. They want the future CERP Steering Committee to function with the same standard decision-making process used by other public governmental bodies.

They also want to make sure the Design Team is allowed to vote on other recommendations—submitted by a majority of the team—to enhance trust, democratic procedures, and transparency in the development of a new AB 617 CERP Steering Committee. And then they’d like to get to work!

“We’ve lost so much time in process-oriented conversations and have very little to show for a year and a half of work: people in our community continue to suffer devastating health effects from air pollution,” says Andrés Soto, Richmond Organizer for Communities for a Better Environment and a Design Team member. “But we’re hoping we can change that.”

Your support can help make this an open and democratic process. You don’t have to live in Richmond-San Pablo to attend this meeting and comment.
