In California, Big Ag and Big Gas have teamed up to sell factory-farm biogas as a so-called “clean, renewable energy source.”
The California Air Resources Board is considering an application for a biogas cluster with 35,000 cows between 6 factory farms. This would be a disaster for local communities, our climate and ratepayers who will subsidize the projects with higher energy bills.
Much like fracked gas, factory farm biogas is another industry ploy to prolong our addiction to dirty, climate-disrupting methane — this time, methane that comes from massive amounts of decomposing animal manure.
These industrial farms not only contribute to the climate crisis through methane emissions, they also pose threats to public health and clean water, disproportionately polluting low-income communities and communities of color. These unhealthy and unsustainable conditions extend to workers and wreak havoc on the social and economic fabric of our rural communities, displacing independent farmers.
Expanding biogas infrastructure will only further entrench factory farms by creating a market for their waste, but Governor Newsom has the influence to stop this dangerous expansion of biogas in the state.
Thanks to our friends at Food and Water Watch for alerting us to this potential disaster!
