Transit Equity Days: February 3,4

January 23, 2021

Join a national network of transit-rider unions, community organizations, environmental groups and labor unions for the fourth annual  Transit Equity Day. Show up to highlight the rights of all people to high-quality public transportation run on clean/renewable energy.

February 4 is the birthday of Rosa Parks, the civil rights leader whose refusal to give up her seat on a bus led to the Montgomery Bus Boycott and eventually to an end to legal segregation of transportation.

In previous years demonstrations have marked Transit Equity Day in more than 40 cities across the country.  This year the Labor Network for Sustainability, host of Transit Equity Day, will hold two days of online and local events.

NATIONAL CONVERSATION ON TRANSIT EQUITY

WHEN

Wednesday, February 3, 12 t0 4 PM Pacific time

Thursday February 4, 8 AM to 12 PM Pacific time

Community and labor organizers will facilitate a forum for transit workers and riders to testify. The goal is to 1) develop a vision and platform for transportation rooted in the experience of those who are most dependent on public transit and 2)  influence decision makers to act to ensure the survival of robust public transportation systems.

We need to guarantee workers and riders from all walks of life have safe, affordable and reliable means of transportation to get to where they need to be, when they need to be there, without struggle, financial stress or prejudice.

Some  sample tweets:
  • When local/state governments cut transit funding, everyone loses. This #TransitEquityDay we demand accessible, reliable and affordable public transit for EVERYONE! bit.ly/savetransit2021

  • Routes serving marginalized communities are often the first to go when transit agencies make budget cuts. Local, state, and federal governments need to make public transit accessible, reliable, and affordable to EVERYONE! #TransitEquityDay bit.ly/savetransit2021

  • We need essential workers and essential workers need public transit. Supporting equitable public transit ensures that essential workers like nurses and grocery store workers can get to their jobs and keep our society running. #TransitEquityDay bit.ly/savetransit2021

Also on February 4: grassroots local and state-level actions around the country will be demanding that local officials address the  need for fiscal support of safe, equitable and affordable public transit that supports a climate-safe economy
